Operation: Mitwas, Itbayat!

The aim of the campaign “Operation: Mitwas, Itbayat” is to help Itbayat Rise again and start anew. The target of this mission are the elementary and high school students of Itbayat. Education is very important in nation-building, however in order to retain 60% or more of what you learned in the four corners of the classroom you need to have materials that will aid you to do so.

Most goods are imported from Basco which become expensive upon reaching the soil of Itbayat. Not all people are well-off there, hence not all students can afford to buy new bag and school supplies of good quality. Unpredictable weather condition is also one of the challenges Ivatans face everyday, it may be sunny in the morning and rainy in the afternoon or vice versa. During the summer it’s burning hot and when it rains it is usually a combination of rain and strong wind. Truth be told, two typhoons already hit the island and on 27 July 2019 a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Itbayat, Batanes resulting in greater damage than would have been expected.

Reconstruction has already started, and in my own little way, would like to make a step to make sure that students will have a fresh start when they return to school. Fresh start with new good quality school bags, and raincoats that they can use whenever the rain pours.
